What do we do about STIGMA?

What do we do about STIGMA?

Journey From Insanity

What is stigma?

stig·ma

nounˈstig-mə

: a set of negative and often unfair beliefs that a society or group of people have about something

(http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/stigma)

What does this have to do with mental illness?

I think anyone who has disclosed mental illness to anyone has dealt with stigma.

Some examples of what we (may) deal with:

* Making it all up

* Weak people

* Manipulative people

* Stupid or of low IQ

* You can snap out of it if only you REALLY wanted to

* Prone to violent outbursts

What can we do about it?

The most important thing for anyone with a mental illness is to educate those around you.  When you disclose illness to anyone around you, it is common for loved ones to be scared – especially if the condition is completely alien to them.  Or worse yet, sensationalized by the media.
